Phonics Fundamentals© I

This intensive 30-hour course will cover Books 1 and 2 of our Phonics Fundamentals program which is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach.  Book 1 focuses on basic sound-symbol relationship of all consonants and short vowels.  Book 2 includes spelling rules, syllable division and word families used with the CVC syllable pattern.  Also featured will be our Interactive Auditory Exercises for phonological awareness activities.  Lectures will include multisensory techniques, non-phonetic word introduction and current research noting the effectiveness of an Orton-Gillingham based program.  Lesson demonstrations, hands-on practice and lesson preparation are included.  This class is open to reading specialists, K-2nd grade and special education teachers, home-schooling parents, prospective tutors for SLD's paid and volunteer programs and individuals interested in learning Orton-Gillingham techniques.

 Upon completion:

  • Participants will be able to develop organized, sequential lesson plans to use during tutoring sessions.
  • Teachers will be able to implement Orton-Gillingham and Phonics Fundamentals techniques in the classroom and/or small groups.
  • SLD tutors will complete a minimum 20 hour internship necessary to be qualified to tutor  in Phonics Fundamentals.
